The Emperor's New Clothes

Yet again a delightful winner for this terrific little venue. Kirk Foster has repeated last year's success with his inventive interpretation of another classic tale, all played out on a single set.

There are many reasons why Foster's formula works so well, not least of all the enthusiasm of the small cast whose empathy with the close proximity of their audience is wonderfully infectious. The kids are totally entranced.

Starting with the energetic appearance of Kate Kitson as Creep, the Emperor's henchman, a simple tale is turned into a gold mine of rich character and audience involvement. Clive Dancey's vain Emperor is a comically camp gem and Sophie Michaels' role as his efficient advisor, like a Thatcherite school teacher, strikes just the right note. Michaels' character masquerades as her imaginary twin sister, a complete contrast which spotlights her considerable acting skill.

My single reservation would be that the script does tend to be a tad too wordy at times, but this was only really apparent in the early sections. The minimal restlessness from some of the kids was soon overcome as they were drawn into a world of magical fun.

And after all, that is what good panto is all about.
